Job Purpose

The Accountant at Bank Iowa reports to an Accounting Manager and assists in maintaining financial records and ensuring that financial transactions are properly recorded. This role also ensures the accuracy of entries posted to ledger accounts by researching and analyzing accounting data and compiling financial data to aid management in the preparation of balance sheets, profit and loss statements and other financial reports.

Essential Functions

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist with holding company and nonbank subsidiary financial records including maintenance of general ledger, posting of transactions, payment of disbursements and distributions, maintenance of financial records, preparation of reconciliations and financial reporting.
  • Responsible for posting journal entries to ensure accuracy of financial records as directed by supervisor.
  • Responsible for preparation of journal entries for month-end and year-end closing, including the preparation of supporting documentation and schedules.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely monthly and year end closing procedures.
  • Assist with annual budgeting and budget reporting.
  • Responsible for analyzing financial statement on monthly basis, including variance analysis and resolving accounting errors, differences and discrepancies in financial reports.
  • Responsible for performing research and analysis of financial data and accounting information.
  • Prepare various general ledger reconciliations.
  • Plays a key role in year-end audit and financial statement preparation.
  • Responsible for maintenance of and adherence to internal control systems.
  • Maintains documentation to support journal entries, schedules, and all work products.
  • Reconciles and monitors changes to Investment Portfolio.
  • Prepares and submits required regulatory reports.
  • Reconciles and monitors Fed account Daily.
  • Works with Cognos and ProfitStar software for financial research, report creation and data entry.
  • Build constructive and effective relationships to support a collaborative work environment.
  • Assists internal customers with financial research requests as needed.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by leader, which may include special project work.
  • Understands and complies with banking regulations by following bank policies and procedures. Stays abreast of relevant regulations, current industry matters, and any changes implemented internally to ensure compliance.
Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent job experience.
  • 2-4 years' experience in an accounting position, experience in a financial institution preferred.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Strong Analytical skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications with a solid base of experience and knowledge using Microsoft Excel specifically.
  • Can work well independently with guidance from supervisor.
  • Experience using software to query financial records and perform financial research.
Hours of Work & Travel
  • Full Time, regular employment (generally, Monday thru Friday 8AM-5PM)
  • Minimal travel (generally less than 10%)
