Manager, Transportation Full-time

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Manager, Transportation will provide the leadership and management necessary to ensure that the Food Bank's transportation department meets long-term and annual goals. The major focus will be on the improve utilization, effectiveness, and efficiency of the team. This position will ensure donors and agencies receive the highest level of service, make decisions that optimize both operational and cost performance, and build strong Associate teamwork within a positive work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A thorough understanding of DOT and FMCSA safety regulations
  • Proficiency in the use of dynamic routing systems
  • Well-developed numerical and analytical skills
  • Must be customer-centric for both internal and external customers
  • Ability to lead and develop team members
Experience:
  • 3 years in transportation management with fleet and a team of drivers
  • Food industry a plus
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage driver scheduling, allocation, and communication functions in accordance with established policies and objectives to affect economical utilization of Transportation resources
  • Maintain fleet and drivers in compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations
  • Coordinate with our Safety Dept. on tracking of all relevant Driver data, such as license status, moving violations, accidents, and other risk and safety-related data
  • Submit recommendations for development of and compliance with transportation policies, procedures, and programs
  • Promote safety initiatives in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), with the ability to implement change
  • Manage various transportation projects
  • Select and manage staffing vendors and temporary staff, as needed
  • Monitor and ensure accurate employee time punches are recorded daily in HRIS system
  • Actively monitor driver performance and coach where appropriate utilizing available TMS tools.
  • Monitor and ensure facility and vehicle security protocols are adhered to at all times
  • Equitable and timely leadership of performance development objectives
  • Foster an achievement-oriented, servant-leadership culture centered on continuous learning, where employees are empowered, engaged, motivated and rewarded for both individual and team contributions
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead a team of approximately 10 drivers
MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • The person in this position needs to adapt well in the face of workplace stressors, such as competing priorities of reasonable or high significance to the successful function of the unit.
  • Must be able to effectively interpret data and make critical decisions that will have a significant impact on the team and organization.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds individually, and up to 50 pounds with the assistance of appropriate equipment and/or co-worker(s)
  • Must be able to successfully operate all gas and electric-powered forklift trucks, as well as manual pallet jacks and other warehouse support equipment, following completion of required training
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • Moderate to loud noise (e.g., light traffic business office with open floor plan with computers, phone, and printers, and medium to heavy traffic in the warehouse with forklifts and pallet jacks).
  • Work schedule is Monday-Friday with occasional weekend work; typically work the morning shift but must be flexible with work schedule.
