Teaching Faculty Positions In Aerospace And Ocean Engineering Full-time

The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech seeks applications for two teaching faculty positions at either the Collegiate Professor or Professor of the Practice ranks effective as early as January 2023. We are seeking candidates for two teaching positions in: (1) Aircraft Design and Systems Engineering, (2) Applied Experimental Methods in AOE. Successful candidates will have a primary commitment to our instructional mission, curricular development, the design and integration of innovative and inclusive teaching, and department service. Teaching faculty are full members of the faculty who are encouraged but not required to participate in research and scholarship, mentor graduate students, and participate in professional service.
The (1) Aircraft Design and Systems Engineering position is responsible for teaching courses related to design of air vehicles, including capstone courses such as Air Vehicle Design and Principles of Project Design & Management, and may include electives in Configuration Aerodynamics and Applied Computational Aerodynamics. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in curriculum development and innovation, particularly project-based learning and experiential learning opportunities, and engaging with outside employers in the development and execution of curricular experiences. In addition, contributions to improving the diversity of the discipline, and experience in working effectively with a diverse student population are also desired.


The (2) Applied Experimental Methods in AOE position is responsible for teaching experimentation and lab-based courses, including Experiments for Aerospace Design, Experiments for Ocean Vehicle Design, and Electronics for Aerospace and Ocean Engineers. The successful candidate will use many of the experimental facilities located on campus for instruction and research, including our low and high Mach number wind tunnels, in particular the world renown Stability Wind Tunnel, towing basin, the Newport News Shipbuilding Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Teaching and Research Laboratory, and drone park. Candidates should have experience working in similar experimental facilities and custom data acquisition hardware and software (e. g. LabVIEW, Matlab).
The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering (http://www.aoe.vt.edu/) includes 42 faculty members overseeing more than $12M in annual research expenditures, with approximately 250 full-time graduate students and 700 undergraduate students. The Aerospace engineering undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked 12th and 14th, respectively, in the nation (2021 U.S. News and World Report). Our online master’s program in Aerospace engineering is ranked #1 (Guide to Online Schools) and The Center for World University Rankings (2017) ranks the Aerospace engineering program at #5. Additionally, with its highly regarded teaching and research programs in Ocean Engineering, the Kevin T.
