Position Summary:
As the Human Resources Director, you will provide human resources leadership to APS and be a change agent. You will work every day to support our organization’s greatest asset: our people. At the American Physical Society, our people support our mission to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics for the benefit of humanity, promote physics, and serve the broader physics community. We are looking for an experienced and versatile Human Resources Director to join our dynamic team and support the long-term goals of the Society.
You will be responsible for leading a team of five HR professionals to execute the APS HR strategy and ensuring operational goals are met; overseeing day-to-day activities and initiatives across all HR functions, including talent acquisition, compensation, benefits, performance management, HR programs and employee engagement initiatives, employee relations, policies and procedures and legal compliance. This role serves as an HR advisor to the core management team and partners with the Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to ensure DEI is embedded throughout HR programs, policies, and initiatives. The Director of HR will provide advice, counsel, guidance and problem-solving expertise to leaders and staff across the organization.

While most duties can be conducted remotely, the position requires periodic in-person work at our College Park location and periodic travel to other APS locations, meetings and events. The American Physical Society allows flexible work hours, responsiveness is required however during the core 9 am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time workday. The successful candidate will join a collaborative international organization.

- Partner with CHRO to inform strategic planning process; develop cross-organizational objectives and tactics
- Execute the HR strategic plan and ensure operational goals are met; facilitate cross-organizational communication and collaboration
- Partner with the Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to infuse DEI throughout HR practices, policies and initiatives and foster a work culture grounded in APS Core Values
- Be a change agent, implementing and driving APS Human Resources innovation
- Lead efforts to attract, retain and motivate employees through employee engagement and employer branding initiatives.
- Partner with the Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to infuse DEI throughout HR practices, policies and initiatives and foster a work culture grounded in APS Core Values.
- Partner with department heads and Senior Leadership team to lead workforce planning and organizational development efforts, including succession planning.
- Guide APS employee relations programs to identify, address and resolve problems. Serve as an advisor to HR staff on escalated issues to ensure appropriate application of performance guidelines, policies and procedures are followed consistently and equitably.
- Direct the planning, development, implementation, budgeting, and support of all Human Resources department functions, creating both short and long-term goals. Track metrics to ensure goals are met.
- Lead the effort to revamp performance management ensuring alignment with the APS strategic plan and Core Values.
- Lead HR technology improvements.
- Facilitate staff meetings in support of HR programs and initiatives
- Ensure that APS meets all compliance and record-keeping requirements, with an emphasis on keeping abreast of state and local laws in which APS does business.
- Oversee OFCCP and immigration compliance.
- Manage policies, standards, and practices to ensure fair, consistent, and effective operations.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of 10 years of HR experience, including years of business partner experience
- Minimum of 2 years supervising and leading HR teams
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred
- Demonstrated change management leader

- Ability to leverage technology to create innovative solutions, continuous improvement, and automation
