The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Northern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Park/General Maintenance Worker II to perform general park and building maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, trash removal, athletic field maintenance, trail maintenance, cleaning and repairing park buildings, and snow removal by working in a team environment. This is a park/general maintenance work at the experienced level, involving operation of most grounds maintenance equipment. Most assignments are as part of a group, but occasionally may work independently. The selected candidates will perform other related duties as assigned.
This position is located at Polk Street Maintenance Facility.

• Operates riding mowers and tractors with attachments to cut parks, ballfields, and brush.
• Operates trucks, truck and trailer combinations, front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks with snow plows, and trash trucks. Using trucks and equipment removes snow, grades fields and other park areas, and hauls materials and equipment. Performs routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Occasionally performs routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
• Maintains athletic fields, according to established standards. Lays out field (for example, measures, plots and squares corners, plots yard lines, and marks lines). Installs amenities associated with athletic fields. Aerates turf areas.
• Installs amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fence (chain link and split rail) basketball rims and nets, tennis poles and nets, etc.
• Performs tree maintenance duties. Operates chain saws. Operates chipping machine to grind brush into mulch. Operates stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
• Inspects playground structures for compliance with established safety standards. Completes inspection and reports unsafe and hazardous conditions of play equipment. Under direction, constructs, installs, and repairs play equipment to ensure safety.
• On a regular basis (more than 50% of the time), provide general direction and instructions on the proper use of equipment to less experienced staff. Informs Leader or Supervisor of job progress and completion and any problems requiring attention.
• Provides assistance setting up special events. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assists in monitoring programs and events.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Pass Commission medical examination.
2. Two years of experience in grounds keeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance;
3. Ability to read and write.
4. Valid driver's license.

Person(s) hired for this position must provide proof of being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (with limited religious or medical exceptions).
May work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.). Ability to lift up to 100 pounds desirable.
