Position Summary
Part-time OLS Instructors demonstrate commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence, including directing student learning in assigned courses, establishing and assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in the on-going development of program curriculum and activities; and through advising of students; participating in college governance and decision making; maintaining current knowledge and skills in area of assignment; building collaborative relationships within the BC community and the community at large; and fostering a positive, caring learning environment in which diversity and pluralism are valued. (See Article 14 of the BCAHE Collective Bargaining Agreement). Instructors perform duties and functions under the direction of the Dean of Connected Learning, and will be directly responsible under the Associate Dean of OLS Bellevue College.
Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule
Part-time faculty is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. Quarterly remuneration for this assignment is:
Base Salary for a 1-Credit Course: $1664.40
Base Salary for a 2-Credit Course: $3224.73
Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

About the Department
Occupational & Life Skills (OLS) is an associate degree program for adults with learning disabilities. In our uniquely supportive skills-based program, students apply academic knowledge through community activities, service learning and social experiences. Students identify a career pathway, gain marketable, workplace-ready competencies, develop better interpersonal skills, and complete an internship in alignment with their career goals.
Essential Functions
Course Design, Materials, and Delivery
Fulfill the requirements and conditions of the BC faculty contract by teaching courses at all levels within the OLS Program, and by facilitating, evaluating and reporting the learning experiences of all students, including Performance Indicators and Course Outcomes.
Organize and follow course plans for assigned courses that include approved course learning outcomes and course content, and evaluation/assessment criteria, and maintain course currency within the discipline. This includes but is not limited to submitting course revisions quarterly to keep relevant with changing times and proposing outcome updates with Associate Dean and Instruction and Student Success Program Manager (or Program Chair if appropriate).
Provide up-to-date course syllabi that establish clear expectations and document course outcomes for students.
Assess and evaluate student learning, and provide precise, timely, constructive, written, and oral feedback to students regarding their learning, class performance, and professional preparation. This includes but is not limited to PI tracking, performance reviews, and end-of-quarter processes (narratives, VPAS, etc.).
Communicate actively with students and create a positive and respectful learning environment that engages all students in teaching and learning activities.
Incorporate a variety of teaching and learning strategies, delivery modalities, and innovative techniques including the integration of technology, Universal Design (UDL), and the latest research to assist in the accessibility, achievement and assessment of learning outcomes.
Apply culturally responsive teaching strategies that draw upon individual student strengths, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and learning preferences to promote student engagement.
Research, schedule, attend, and engage students in Community Activities relevant to their classroom learning and other active learning experiences, providing the opportunity to learn about and practice information literacy as appropriate to the discipline.
Participate in course, curriculum, and program assessment, review, and revision, including new course/credential development, integrating assessment results along with the latest research, and aiming at continuous improvement.
Campus and Department Initiatives
Governance: Faculty governance responsibilities vary by rank as follows:
Associate Adjuncts: 7 hours/FTE/quarter.
Senior Adjuncts: 14 hours/FTE/quarter.
Respond to particular student needs in collaboration with the OLS Student Success Team, BC Disability Resource Center and other campus resources.
Mentoring and Advising
Meet with students 15 minutes before and after class to assist with coursework and classroom-related questions.
Assist students with their life, educational, career goals, and discipline-specific inquiries.
Provide appropriate referrals to mental health, student success, and other services based on emergent and recurrent student needs.
Consult, mentor, or collaborate with OLS and Bellevue College colleagues to foster student success and build community.
Professional Development
Maintain competence in assigned discipline(s) through participation in professional organizations, seminars, workshops, conferences, reading journals, and taking courses.
Participate in professional development activities related to the scholarship of teaching and learning, learning theory, universal design, and education.
Service to the Department/Department Specific Responsibilities
Submit a course story per section taught to OLS marketing and OLS Newsletter (SWAY) quarterly.
Collaborate with Student Success Team and implement action/support plans developed by the Instruction and Student Success Program Manager (ISSPM).
Attend Action Plan meetings.
Attend Quarterly Staff Meeting and End-of-Quarter (EOQ) meeting with ISSPM (1 hour/quarter).
Participate in Student Success days per BC policy/contract, and provide data for, and attend three one-hour OLS problem-solving meetings (Brown Bags) per quarter. If unable to attend the scheduled Brown Bag meetings, the instructor will be required to provide data and meet with the ISSPM 1:1 (1-hour).
New Student Orientation (First Year Course Faculty Only; Paid at Hourly Rate)
Participate in Service Projects (up to 4 hours per year).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree
Demonstrated experience working with the learning disability community
Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning of students/colleagues from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues
Demonstrated ability and willingness to adapt to changing teaching schedules and situations
Preferred Qualifications
Degree specific to special education
Three or more years teaching experience
Higher education (adult) teaching experience
Coursework and/or expertise in career development, communication, and/or computer applications
Knowledge/experience working with a variety of teaching modalities and delivery methods, including learning management system, simulation, flipped classes, synchronous online, and hybrid courses
Ability and willingness to employ continuous improvement in curriculum, teaching, and assessment
Willingness to participate in college initiatives/governance
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
