Schedule: Day shifts with rotating weekends

The Lead Cardiac Technician is responsible for the day to day operations of the cardiac stress lab, which includes the EKG department. Under the direction of a cardiologist, the lead cardiac technician will assist in performing ETT?s, stress echoes, nuclear stress tests/MIBIs and adenosine stress testing.

Cardiac stress technicians are responsible for scheduling inpatient cardiac stress exams, preparing patients for cardiac stress tests, performing EKGs, recording vital signs including manual blood pressures, setting up patients with Holter monitors, reviewing patient lab results and compiling a preliminary stress test report.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Lead Cardiac Technician is responsible for the following:

  • Orienting new employees in the cardiac stress and EKG departments
  • Ensuring competency of cardiac technicians performing stress tests and EKGs
  • Ensures reports and data are accurately entered into Epic and MUSE systems
  • Ensures critical results are reported and documented as per department policy
  • Participates in quality improvement plans as necessary
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are followed
  • Ensures appropriate staffing for both EKG and Cardiac Stress departments during all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Acts as a backup timekeeper in the absence of Operations Manager or Director
  • Adapts to workflow changes and plans as outlined by Operations Manager and/or Director of Non-Invasive Testing, as is necessary to a changing environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required to ensure efficient operations of the department and quality patient care.

Performs all duties of a cardiac technician:

  • Assists cardiologist with all cardiac stress tests: Nuclear Stress/MIBI, Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT); Exercise Stress Echocardiogram; Pharmacological Stress Echocardiogram and occasionally Adenosine Stress exams
  • Explains testing procedure to patient and prepares patient for testing
  • Ensures patient safety at all times
  • Performs cardiac stress testing duties alongside a cardiologist
  • Assesses each patient via patient chart prior to testing as necessary
  • Reviews patient lab results (troponin, CPK, etc) as necessary prior to testing
  • Enters accurate test results into Epic and MUSE reporting systems for preliminary report
  • Can appropriately respond to a patient emergency per hospital and department protocols
  • Ensures equipment checks and infection control procedures are performed as per policy
  • Ensures data entry is entered and transmitted correctly
  • Trains new EKG and Cardiac Stress employees and assures their competency
  • Covers for EKG lab techs when necessary, including performing EKGs and setting up Holter monitors
  • Excellent patient service skills required; supports service excellence initiatives and service excellence in all interactions with patients, patient family members/caregivers and staff
  • Can manually measure blood pressures
  • Able to recognize artifact and life-threatening arrhythmias on EKG recordings
  • Must interact respectfully with all departmental and hospital staff
  • Must be able to multi-task and think and act proactively.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A cardiologist is present in the stress lab with patient and cardiac tech during all testing. The lead cardiac tech must be able to assist in the rare event a patient loses consciousness while on a treadmill. Most of the working day is spent standing and walking. Must be able to move a patient on a stretcher, as well as occasionally move equipment that is on wheels. The lead cardiac technician typically works 40-hours per week Monday thru Friday with no on-call hours required. In the event the weekend and holiday cardiac stress tech is unavailable, must arrange for coverage of lab.

  • Preferred: BS in Exercise Science or related major
  • Current BLS required
  • Required: At least one year of direct patient care in a cardiac stress lab or EKG lab setting
  • Preferred: Two or more years of direct patient care in a cardiac lab setting
