Senior Scientist/Engineer, Group Lead, Research & Development Full-time

Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an open position for a Leader of the Applications Core Sub-team to join the Next Generation Biomanufacturing R&D team at our location in beautiful Bend, OR. This is an excellent opportunity to join a challenging, dynamic, and cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who focus on improving the manufacturing of biologics medicines.

As the Application Core Sub-team Lead for the Next Generation Bioprocess R&D group, you will be responsible for leading a cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who innovate and deliver solutions to biomanufacturing challenges at Lonza. You will be responsible for ensuring a high quality of science for R&D projects by engaging directly with your team on technical delivery of application core team projects, as well as continuously growing your team members, and supporting a collaborative, curious, and results-driven culture.

The mission of the applications core sub-team you will be leading is to develop and transfer new biomanufacturing platform processes and technologies to the Lonza network. The team works closely with the Fundamentals Core Sub-team in Bend, as well as other R&D and operations teams globally in the Lonza organization to ensure development and transfer of new processes to the Lonza network. The applications core maintains a laboratory scale fully digital bioreactor laboratory, and a flexible pilot scale space for developing new processes for Lonza. The team is focused on designing and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and communicating results to Lonza R&D and operations teams. The team also leads the network in development of automated and digital bioprocess systems. The team applies strong engineering fundamentals to in a hypothesis-driven environment to guide the development and tech transfer of new technologies across the Lonza organization.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and grow a high performing team of scientists and engineers who innovate and deliver next generation process technologies
  • Ensure high quality of science and efficient delivery of process R&D projects
  • Responsible for growth of the considerable talent in the applications core sub-team
  • Contributing technically to projects directly with team members to ensure high quality of science
  • Proactively supporting a culture of innovation, team-work, curiosity, and driving results
  • Work closely with other R&D and operations functions at Lonza
  • Supporting agile project management framework
  • Travelling to conferences and other Lonza sites where needed to further the mission of the sub-team (<5% time)
  • Effectively contributing outside of core technical area
  • Direct and frequent communication of scientific results to technical stakeholders

Position Requirements:

  • B.S./M.S./PhD in Chemical Engineering/Bioengineering or M.S./PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or similar biological science
  • 8 or more years of bioreactor laboratory experience.
  • 2 or more years leading a scientific team
  • Direct experience with DeltaV or similar distributed control systems
  • Experience in protein purification is a plus
  • Strong fundamentals in mass and energy balances, heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and biology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
