Esperanza means hope. Esperanza Academy Charter School (EACS) is located in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia and prides itself on serving the students in the community in which it is located. During the 2022-2023 school year, Esperanza Academy will serve grades: K, 1, 4, 5, and 6-12. Esperanza Academy believes that education can be a vehicle for social and economic progress for marginalized communities. Our proven track record of academic success with historically underserved students sets us apart. The Academy has 11th-grade test scores above the city of Philadelphia average and value-added math and reading proficiency growth is among the highest in Pennsylvania. Students graduate at a rate exceeding 90% and drop out at a rate of only 1%. For seven out of eight years our high school has been ranked as one of the Best High Schools in the country.

By the fall of 2023, we will have fully expanded to a K-12 school serving over 2,400 students. This expansion will result in Esperanza Academy being the second-largest single charter school in the city of Philadelphia.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Esperanza Academy Charter School is seeking a part-time Introduction to Art Teacher for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Introduction to Art is the first course in a tiered progression of classes preparing students at the high school to participate in Advanced Placement Art and pursue Visual Arts at the collegiate level. This course is designed to introduce students to the history, criticism, and practice of art-making including ideation and revision.

Students will gain experience in analyzing and critiquing artwork throughout the course and in art production. Students will consider art-making styles and techniques in the context of culture, both western and non-western while producing original works. Students will create paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, books, and mixed-media images. The course culminates in a student exhibition, utilizing professional presentation skills.

The candidate is expected to organize and lead art-related enrichment activities such as field trips, and art shows, including the installation of the culminating school art show and auction. This is an optimal opportunity for an individual who desires to remain in a classroom setting while maintaining flexibility.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • A passion for education and a belief that your zip code does not dictate your destiny.
  • A Bachelor?s Degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Official transcripts showing the degree conferred are required prior to the starting date of employment.)
  • Portfolio: Candidates will be asked to share a portfolio that demonstrates mastery of a variety of art-making media and art-making techniques including 3-D media such as papier-mâché and ceramics, printmaking techniques including monoprinting and relief as well as observational drawing and painting, including portraiture.
  • Certification: Applicants interested in this opportunity should have one of the following PA teacher certifications before their start date: Biology 7-12, (8405), Chemistry 7-12 (8420), or Physics (8470).
  • Clearances: All applicants must have current FBI, PA Criminal, and Child Abuse background checks.
  • Spanish fluency is preferred but not required.
