The Chief of Staff reports to and is a trusted advisor of the LOB CIO.

The Chief of Staff supports the CIO and leadership team to determine, articulate and execute the go-forward vision, mission, strategies, and tactics to deliver business value, drive growth, innovation and enterprise reuse, affordability, and quality.

The Chief of Staff proactively facilitates and executes on strategic initiatives and projects, responding to requests and serving as a key contact with stakeholders. The Chief of Staff is accountable for facilitating cross functional/organization wide initiatives and programs; supporting the LOB CIO in developing executive presentations and managing projects that will require collaborative work across the team and broader organization. In all capacities, the person in this role works collaboratively with other leaders and Chiefs of Staff across the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Executive Reporting & Communications
    • Developing and managing executive reporting and remediation plans for the team?s MBOs/metrics/scorecards with close attention to detail for accuracy and insight
    • Developing, managing and/or delegating the tracking of progress against plans, identifying any deviations and suggestions to remediate
    • Consulting on and preparing executive level presentations (both internal and external)
  • Meeting Planning, Facilitation & Follow-up
    • Developing agendas, coordinating logistics and materials distribution for leadership meetings
    • Ensuring the meeting agendas represent the key initiatives and the overall priorities of the business
    • Anticipating, managing preparation for, and when appropriate, facilitating meetings and events
    • Preparing and coordinating resources and materials for critical meetings
    • Gathering and deciphering critical documents and information
    • Investigating and thoroughly answering critical questions and ensuring timely follow-up of all action items
  • Priority Management
    • Managing and drive day to day decisions in support of the team?s priorities and initiatives
    • Managing an efficient operating rhythm for the team week over week to include planning, preparation, content submissions, and action item follow-up
    • Performing program analysis, exercising sound reasoning to systematically evaluate data, identify variances and understand accountabilities for mitigation and appropriate correction plans
    • Managing recurring projects on varying timelines with the flexibility to take on additional ad hoc work as needed
    • Working closely with Finance, Communications and Human Capital partners to ensure a smooth operating rhythm
  • Collaborative Program & Strategic Planning and Management
    • Developing integrated annual plans in support of the annual UHG business plan, goal development and planning processes
    • Establishing, cultivating, and maintaining strong, collaborative working relationships with key internal and external constituencies, with a focus on resolving as many internal questions and issues as possible
    • Assisting leadership in creating alignment and a unified approach across plans
    • Vetting and providing feedback on programs and other key initiatives
    • Translating highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences
    • Working collaboratively across teams to drive transformation objectives and goals
  • Organizational Effectiveness
    • Setting the tone and bringing the culture to life through daily actions, living our culture principles, and casting a strong leadership shadow of integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation, and performance
    • Overseeing delivery/creation of organizational communications to ensure timely, concise messaging
    • Supporting the team in understanding and acting based on employee feedback through employee experience surveys and employee listening sessions
    • Ensuring the creation of a credible forecast and monthly reporting of actuals to meet financial targets, ensure timely acquisition of resources and delivery of business commitments
    • Facilitating organizational change management
    • Supporting team member talent management, career development, talent mobility leveraging organizational tools and resources

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of communications including written, verbal, and presentations to all levels of a large-scale organization with proficiency in MS Office products
  • 5+ years of experience in managing people and processes through influence (vs. direct authority)
  • 5+ years of experience in managing and protecting confidential information for a mid to large scale enterprise
  • 5+ years of experience interacting effectively with executives, building strong relationships across stakeholders, and obtaining buy in for major initiatives
  • 4+ years of financial experience - forecasting, tracking actuals, line-item reviews, financial analytics
  • 4+ years of experience creating mission, vision, strategies and translating into tactical plans
  • 4+ years of change management experience - leading teams through and championing organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor?s degree in business, finance, health administration, related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with UHG businesses
  • Knowledge of/experience in Agile methodologies and process
  • Driving success across geographically dispersed teams
  • Independent decision-making skills to drive sound, quality decisions in a timely manner
  • Solid organizational, analytic and quantitative skills

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $113,500 to $218,100. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $113,500 to $218,100. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
