Land Use Plans Checker I Full-time

Duties Summary

Receives training in the methods and resources used in reviewing architectural and cadastral plans for conformance to the Zoning Code, Building Code, and other applicable laws, rules and regulations; works at the counter receiving permit applications and providing information to the public; and performs other related duties as required.
There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Planning Department - West Hawai'i Division in Kailua-Kona.
The eligible list may be used for Land Use Plans Checker I permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Receives training in planning rules and regulations, Zoning Code, the General Plan, Community Development plans, Special Management Areas, the Building Code and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Receives applications and plans over the counter.
  • Reviews simple plans and recommends action on permit applications.
  • Makes necessary computations of height, floor area, parking areas, etc.
  • Answers inquires and directs applicants to other agencies as necessary.
  • Posts and maintains tax map books and other necessary records.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from high school, and
  • two (2) years of clerical work experience, and
  • one (1) year of public contact work experience.
Note: Substitution of education for experience:
  • An Associate in Science Degree in Business Technology, OATS, or Secretarial Science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the two (2) years of clerical work experience.
  • Scan and attach your official college transcript to be credited for the substitution of experience.
Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; operation and maintenance of standard office machines; principles and practices of public relations; and general government operations.

Ability to: learn, understand and interpret laws, ordinances, rules and regulations pertinent to county planning and building activities; read construction plans and maps; deal courteously and effectively with the public; operate and maintain standard office machines and equipment; and make accurate arithmetic computations.

Physical Requirements: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
