Recreation and Education Assistant/Psychiatric Treatment Counselor Education Focus

The Recreation and Education Assistant (REA) is primarily responsible for the planning, implementation, and supervision of leisure and recreational activities for children and adolescents in a residential psychiatric treatment setting. Services provided by the Recreation and Education Assistant must encourage healthier living, enrichment, personal growth, and self-awareness. In addition,responsibilities include but are not limited to; coordinating with schools,parents, AK Child & Family staff, and community members to meet the educational needs of children and/or adolescents; facilitating school enrollment and placement; and interaction with/supervision of children and/or adolescents who are placed in residential treatment units and have severe emotional and behavioral problems. The REA adheres to standards and regulations as set forth by the Agency, OCS Licensing, The Joint Commission, and Medicaid. The REA duties are carried out in accordance with AK Child &Family policies, the AK Child & Family Mission, Core Values and AK Child& Family Philosophy of Care. The REA assumes additional duties as assigned.

Supervision and Coordination of Services:
The Recreation and Education Assistant is supervised directly by the Recreation and Education Supervisor (RES). The Recreation and Education Assistant collaborates with all other residential services staff through interdisciplinary teamwork and assigned committee responsibilities. The Recreation and Education Assistant collaborates with all appropriate school staff and community members through intra-agency communication and teamwork. The Recreation and Education Assistant is a member of the Recreation and Education Department and coordinates services with all members of the treatment team and residential services. In addition, the REA will be available to assist in implementing appropriate treatment strategies with the students, timely documentation, cleaning duties, cooking duties, and psycho-educational groups within the residential units.
Qualifications:
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities: Eligible applicants must possess the ability to work effectively with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children/youthand their families; communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; to legibly produce reports regarding students and program events; and an possess understanding and sensitivityto serving a culturally diverse/and or special needs population. In addition a working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc) is preferred.
Education and experience: The REA must have a High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two years residential child care or two years of college or combination of college and experience equaling two years is required.
Physical Demands:
The Recreation and Education Assistant (REA) must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; engage invigorous physical and recreational activities, physically manage students, aged six to seventeen years, according to AK Child & Family physical management policy, and move quickly throughout the campus and outdoor area in order to monitor/supervise student activities, alarm systems, emergency procedures,lighting, and safety hazards. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
The Recreation and Education Assistantis required to transport self within the Anchorage Borough to meet withschools, families, and other involved parties; drive and transport students in AKChild & Family vehicles; efficiently access AK Child & Family andcommunity buildings for meetings and agency activities in order to perform alljob responsibilities; and participate in the maintenance of a cleanrecreational facility, residential units, and grounds (field maintenance,sweeping, mopping, and minor equipment repair.)
The Recreation and Education Assistantwill occasionally be required to supervise and assist students with chores and useunit washer and dryer, sort, fold and store laundry.
