Position Summary The Custom Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing detailed design drawings and specifications for mechanical parts and assemblies using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment with minimal supervision.


Duties and Responsibilities • Develop detailed design drawings and specifications for mechanical parts and assemblies using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment. • Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, manufacturing processes, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete designs and drawings. • Responsible for assuring designs meet all safety and regulatory requirements. • Participate in completing FMEA’s. • Operate with minimal supervision and/or engineering support. • Interfaces with suppliers, Marketing, Engineering, Purchasing, and Manufacturing Engineering to assure designs meet objectives for quality, performance, schedule, costs and manufacturability (DFMA). • Support planning and builds of custom and/or prototype assemblies. • Complete layouts, shop drawings, assign part numbers; create bills of material, complete routings, cost estimates, and installation sheets for custom products so manufacturing can be completed in a timely manner. • May work individually or with another designer and/or drafter to complete projects. • Confers with customer to identify the root cause of problems that develops with design and implement corrective actions through ECO’s. • Support planning and builds of custom and/or prototype assemblies. • Creates plan and puts metrics in place to manage risks. • Support product testing as needed. • Seeks areas of opportunity for cross-collaboration between departments. • Responds to rep and customer needs timely and professionally. • Create CNC programs for 2 – axis mill as needed. • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications • Must have passed the CPSI exam or extensive knowledge of American Society of Testing and Materials and Consumer Products Safety Commission standards (can obtain after hire). • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school in mechanical drafting. • 5+ years of work experience as a Mechanical Designer using 3D CAD (Solidworks and AutoCAD preferred). • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel, Lotus Notes, ERP system and PDM Software. • Knowledge of numerous manufacturing processes and materials. Strong design experience with sheet metal and tubing fabrication, rotational molding, and sand castings is desirable. • Ability to manage a variety of project sizes. • Able to multi-task, and pay attention to detail and accuracy. • Able to make sound and timely decisions.
