Vice President, Human Resources & Labor Relations Full-time

As a key member of the Selfhelp Executive Council and Leadership Team and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Vice President Human Resources & Labor Relations will be responsible for setting the vision for and leading the HR programs, activities and policies in support of the organization’s programs, day to day operations, and future strategic plans. The VP will champion, collaborate and innovate on a broad range of human resource issues, including talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, compensation management, employee experience, benefits, HRIS, training and learning. As a senior HR leader, you will be expected to advance all people, talent and culture strategy with the goal of establishing Selfhelp as an “employer of choice” organization maximizing the employee experience for over 2,000 employees.

The Vice President Human Resources & Labor Relations will assume the following key responsibilities:

HR Strategy & Business Partnership

  • Engages executive leadership and management in the planning of HR programs and policies to support the operational needs of the organization

  • Works closely with executive and management staff to align organizational strategy to HR strategy, and ensure this alignment extends to all aspects of talent and people management. Will be instrumental in supporting the growth of the Selfhelp organization and the HR function, championing the organization’s core values and ensuring a positive work culture

  • Leads and provides direction to the HR team to execute organization-wide HR initiatives

  • Participates in strategic planning discussions to shape the talent and human resource strategy to proactively meet the changing and emerging needs of the organization.


    • Leads labor contract negotiations; oversees Collective Bargaining Agreement administration; cultivates positive relationship with union leadership; manages grievance/dispute resolution, coordinates arbitration preparation and matters brought before the NLRB

    • Provides oversight of internal investigations and ensures compliance with state and federal employment laws and regulations; and responds to regulatory inquiries, audits and charges related to employment practices.

    • Serves as Management Trustee for the paraprofessional employee’s Health & Welfare and Pension Funds


    oversight & Management of Volunteer Services


    • Oversees and manages the Volunteer function for the organization including setting the strategy for deploying volunteers across the organization’s programs

    • Develops all related policies and procedures including coordinating the assignment and match of volunteers with appropriate programs and volunteer opportunities

    • Coordinate all onboarding activities for volunteers and troubleshoots all operational and administrative issues

      relating to volunteers


    Ensures the HR strategy is aligned with the vision and goals for the organization, and responsive to the needs of

    • members of the senior leadership and management team

    • Provides on–going counsel and advice on strategic human resources matters facing the organization

    • Stays current with emerging and innovative HR “best practices” and integrates these practices in the delivery of

      HR activities and initiatives




    People | Talent | HR Operations

    • Leads and supports the Human Resources team in delivering high quality HR support in the following core areas: talent acquisition, employee and labor relations, leadership development and learning, benefits, compensation planning, policy setting, performance management, HRIS and employee engagement

    • Advises, counsels and supports managers on employee performance issues, compliance and employee investigations

    • Creates environment which fosters employee engagement and a positive employee experience

    • Develops a performance management and compensation plan for the organization; determines market competitiveness of compensation and oversees all salary planning and forecasting

    • Helps build and foster performance culture throughout the organization

    • Oversees the administration of all benefit programs; negotiates with insurance carriers and other third parties to ensure affordable and high quality benefits for the organization

    • Sets the vision for a talent recruitment strategy in the home care, managed care and human service markets

    • Oversees onboarding activities of new employees to the organization and orientation programs

    • Supports employee leave of absence/return to work issues at the department/manager level

    • Establishes and promotes learning, development and career pathway initiatives for all levels of staff

    • Sets the vision for HRIS and other workflow systems needed to support HR initiatives and programs

    • Works with outside employment counsel to troubleshoot complex employment issues/matters

    • Ensures that the organization’s employment policies comply with federal, state and local laws, regulations and accreditation standards; maintains regulatory compliant employee records

    • Leads diversity & inclusion efforts and initiatives to ensure that the organization’s culture and actions align with its core commitment to these values, and that all employees are treated fairly and respectfully

    • Establishes a professional, “customer service” presence and relationship with external parties, potential partners and prospective employees joining the organization

    • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement relating to human resource administration, deliverables and reporting

      Labor Relations | Union Negotiations


    • Represents executive leadership regarding all labor and employment related matters

    • Works and consults with Selfhelp’s General Counsel and outside employment counsel on labor relations strategy


  • Designs and implements key HR performance indicators and metrics for consideration by executive leadership and management to help drive and support key operational decisions

  • Ability to collaborate and forge positive relationships with staff at all levels

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; comfortable addressing and making presentations to large groups of staff

  • Problem solver with excellent critical thinking skills

  • Highly motivated and self-directed, with attention to detail

  • Natural relationship builder and ability to inspire and motivate others



Knowledge, Skills And Requirements

.

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:


Experience | Education:


  • Master’s in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field from an accredited college or university

  • 12+ years as a proven senior human resources leader overseeing people, talent and employee experience

    preferably in a nonprofit, healthcare, education or related organization of similar size, diversity and scope

  • A proven track record of labor relations experience, collective bargaining and effectively managing union

    relationships is strongly preferred

  • Strong knowledge of employment related laws and regulations

  • SHRM certification a plus
