Job Summary

As a member of the professional staff, contributes specialized knowledge and skill in the discipline of Global Property and Casualty Claims in support of department business objectives. Generally works under limited supervision, but within established guidelines, producing and analyzing more complex business information to assist in the decision making process.

Specific Job Summary

  • Oversee the property loss reporting service, who takes first reports of loss from all Marriott branded hotels participating in Marriott procured program to ensure that: Information is recorded accurately and reported to the adjusters, insurers, brokers and risk management in a timely manner and that all quarterly service invoices are reconciled accurate and paid in a timely manner.
  • Develop and report on appropriate metrics that reflect the outstanding losses and anticipated timelines.
  • Provide post-loss coverage evaluations and identify opportunities to enhance or clarify policy language for the insurance group.
  • Coordinate and conduct semi-annual property claims meetings with the property insurance adjusters, Marriott Risk Management, lead insurers and brokers to review all open claims.
  • Participate in meetings with our insurance and accounting groups to review Marriott’s global property insurance program in anticipation of renewal and to implement new policies and procedures.

Specific Expected Contributions (including duties and responsibilities)

  • Routine interaction with senior financial and operational executives within Marriott. Routine interaction is also required with hotel owners, asset managers, hotel executive teams and owner and franchise services.
  • Direct and act as the principal insurance contact on all first party property and business interruption insurance claims from date of loss through settlement for all brands in the Marriott procured property insurance program.
  • Perform similar functions for all locations that do not participate in the Marriott property insurance program to protect Marriott’s interests.
  • Following an insured event the Global Property & Casualty Examiner, will, as appropriate: inspect the loss location; meet with local management team, hotel owners, insurers, adjusters, experts and vendors to develop, implement and coordinate a recovery plan; develop a timeline for the completion of the repairs; negotiate advance payments with the insurance adjuster; manage all parties in the execution of their responsibilities to minimize the period of interruption and maximize the insurance recovery andprovide expert advice and direction to senior and executive management.
  • Direct and oversee all aspects of Marriott’s first party property insurance adjusters work to ensure: quality claims handling; thorough loss reporting; timely responses to loss locations; coordination of payments and appropriate application of the property insurance policy
  • Read all adjuster loss reports and monthly bordereau reports to identify opportunities to accelerate the claim adjustment process.
  • Direct and actively participate in meetings and conference calls with loss locations, owners, vendors, regional and corporate departments regarding all aspects of a first party property loss.
  • Develop and assemble the necessary resources of Marriott prior to a predicted insured event. These resources typically include corporate and regional departments for: Architecture & Construction; Engineering; Law; Finance & Accounting; Owner & Franchise Services; Human resources; Loss Prevention and Information Resources.
  • Recruits, directs and manages a team of external experts who, following an insured peril will: Stabilize buildings & grounds; Prepare damage assessments; Develop mitigation strategies; Arrange for temporary water and power sources; Mobilize emergency drying equipment; Coordinate emergency workers who can assist with loss mitigation & repair of the building; Manage large construction projects; Develop sound remediation protocols with an industrial hygienist and Restore the asset to its pre-loss condition.
  • Recruit and direct a team of forensic accountants in the preparation of business interruption claims. Tasks include: Assigning losses and providing direction for calculating the loss; Introducing accountants to the hotel management team, owners, asset managers and senior management; Provide accountants with the loss history; Review all of the accountant’s work and billings.
  • Review and identify potential subrogation opportunities in all first party property claims by directing the adjusters and subrogation counsel in their pursuit of these recoveries.
  • Ensure that Marriott’s management team are informed on large first party property losses by providing the following; likely success and estimated amounts of insurable claims; the Anticipated timing of the insurer’s payments for property damage and business interruption losses and Strategies being employed to secure and maximize equitable insurance recoveries for both Marriott and our hotel owners.
  • Establish direct relationships with owners on all large losses. Frequent contact is required along with the coordination of Owner & Franchise Services group and our Executive Management team. This is accomplished by: Thoroughly reviewing the claim process with the owners; Establishing Marriott and hotel owner’s respective interests in the loss; Discussing the pros and cons of retaining internal and external resources to assist with loss mitigation, stabilization and repair of the asset; Discussing applicable coverage issues, sub-limits, shared limits deductibles, advance payment process, calculation of a business interruption claims, recommendations for retaining a forensic accountant; dealing with certificates of insurance, and payment procedures.
  • Actively coordinate the property claim process with Marriott’s property insurance broker.
  • Coordinate decision making on workers’ compensation, auto and general liability files with the Senior Director, Global Claims and the Law Department when loss reserves exceed authority. Produce high cost memos to advise the designated litigation attorney on significant facts and developments.
  • Responsible for excess carrier notification, updates and coordination of information.
  • Analyze coverage and coordinate efforts with other risk management functions to assist in the coverage decision making process.
  • Become involved in trial preparation, attendance, monitoring and strategy. Also, ensure litigation management techniques (planning budgeting and evaluation) are being used as stated in the Marriott Casualty Claims Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Maintain a diary on all casualty losses in iVos. Routinely review the file so that the Senior Director is closely aware of developments to provide timely guidance to the Marriott Claims Services’ regional offices.
  • Audit Marriott Claims Services’ six regional offices and other claims administrators upon request of the Senior Director of Global Claims.
  • Complete special projects and other tasks assigned by the Senior Director of Global Claims.
  • Conduct meetings, give presentations and assist with the daily activities of the Corporate Casualty Claims Department.
  • Review and manage all litigated cases that are going to mediation.

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates should possess knowledge and experience and demonstrate strong leadership and relationship skills as follows:

  • At least 8 years of claims adjusting experience
  • Prior first party property experience preferred
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college/business/technical school required
  • Applicable industry licensing
  • Demonstrate strong leadership/teamwork skills
  • Ability to grasp and apply technical knowledge including litigation case management and adjusting skills.
  • Effective reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Possess very sound coaching, counseling and development planning skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Advanced knowledge of claims process
  • Good communication skills (verbal, listening, writing), including the ability to deliver difficult messages to customers and /or claimants
  • Good investigation skills
