Ultrasonic Technician Full-time

Summary: Responsible for checking the internal soundness of castings through nondestructive testing procedures to ensure customer requirements are achieved and are in compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ultrasonically (UT) examines castings in priority order.
  • Logs daily utilization of equipment and daily utilization of ultrasonic equipment.
  • Performs and logs daily maintenance check of ultrasonic devices.
  • Requisitions departmental supplies.
  • Ultrasonically tests castings when required per specification(s).
  • Starts up, operates, shuts down, cleans, and maintains equipment as needed.
  • Locates and transfers all casting to be examined.
  • Organizes and files examination results.
  • Fills out any and all log sheets, checks sheets and/or records required.
  • Maintains a clean work area.
  • Time Stamps completed work.
  • Follows job work instructions and training matrix, where applicable.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Previous UT experience or on-the-job training is preferred but not required

Proficient in training and demonstrating the proper execution of textbook lessons and other training aids to assist in the certification of other Soundness Technicians.

Strong math and/or science background desired.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:
Basic knowledge of computers is required.

Certificates and Licenses:
Ultrasonic Technician Level C:
  • Is able to perform all of the essential duties and responsibilities from above, with minimal to no supervision. He/she can only perform ultrasonic once certified to UT Level I under the Supervision of a Certified Level 2
Ultrasonic Technician Level B:
  • Meet and maintain all requirements of a Level C.
  • UT Level I & II (requires 40 hours of off-site training for each). Re-certification required every 3 years.
  • Evaluates examinations against specifications and dispositions product accordingly.
  • Valid Fork Truck license
  • Inspection and Maintenance of Ultrasonic Equipment
Ultrasonic Technician Level A:
  • Meet and maintain all requirements of a Level B.
  • Prepares scan plans in conjunction with the lead operator and supervisor
  • Has a working knowledge of Straight and Angle Beam to include Phased Array.
  • Liquid Dye Penetrant certification to Level II is not required, but preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
