Communications Strategist Full-time

Morehouse School of Medicine seeks a dynamic team player to fill a Communications Strategist opportunity in the Office of The President and Dean. This position will amplify Morehouse School of Medicine’s mission and vision with emphasis placed on incorporating the impact of our work locally, nationally and globally. A multitude of communications strategies will be used including digital, print, media relations, community outreach and more.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff this role will prepare the Office of the President’s communications including speech writing, production of newsletters, town hall messaging and agenda development. This role is pivotal in the management of speaking engagements.

  • Publish stories on the appropriate platform.
  • Format and edit MSM digital and printed material
  • Work in concert with senior staff to determine the overall framing of an issue and then routinely work independently to produce blog posts, op-eds, and talking points
  • Coordinate the amplification of stories on School social media platforms by liaising with the digital/social team
  • Support development of enterprise projects, including web, video/audio and print pieces required inclusive of the development of scientific and educational presentations across multiple mediums
  • Manage the online and electronic presence of The Office of the President and Dean: generate content that is engaging, up-to-date, and results in measurable action; increase in current digital channels; assess most effective opportunities for expansion of channels
Assist with Internal Communications Work:
  • Write, edit and publish (internal) stories and announcements from the Office of The President and Dean
  • Support production/distribution of internal newsletters for faculty, staff and students
  • Support regular metrics reporting on Intranet site/internal content performance
Assist with External Communications Work:
  • Collaborate with external communications team to support a variety of media relations activities, including but not limited to pitching media, preparing executive spokesperson preparation materials, and research relevant to external communications priorities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field required from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Experience: 5-7 years experience in writing, editing, graphic design and layout conception or comparable experience required.
Minimum Competencies:
  • Strong written and presentation communications skills, including AP style/writing/editing experience
  • Strong experience with the use of social media
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, coordinate multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Communicates effectively and professionally one-to-one and in small groups
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and proposes new ideas and solutions
  • Strong collaborator, willing to work across the team and school to produce high-quality content that strengthens Morehouse School of Medicine’s reputation and presence
Preferred Qualifications

Software Experience:
  • MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with exceptional fluency in MS Word and PowerPoint
  • ExperiencePreferred Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years experience in a writing, marketing, communications or public relations role
  • Experience working within Google Analytics for content performance measurement and reporting
  • Experience working with diverse communities and partners
  • Ability to work long hours and occasional evenings and weekend
  • Ability to travel occasionally
Preferred Competencies:
  • Familiarity with scaled non-profit and higher education or academic environments
  • Works efficiently in and through ambiguity
working in web platforms as well as email platforms

  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with project management/collaboration tools
