Industrial Hygienist Full-time

BSI Consulting Services is seeking an experienced Industrial Hygienist to join the team. This position will be out of Gaithersburg, MD. The role of a Industrial Hygienist position requires Anticipation, Recognition, Evaluation, Prevention and Control of conditions which could result in illness, impaired health, or significant discomfort in the workplace.

The IH will perform assignments independently, but in cooperation and alignment with the established procedures and objectives of the Industrial Hygiene Manager and Team. The individual carries out assignments ranging from simple technician level tasks to moderately complex tasks in any area of the industrial hygiene program. Work is designed to maintain compliance, achieve best practice (where feasible), and provide continuous improvement in goals and objectives, while expanding the incumbent?s training and experience in the various phases of the GBSHE program. Most assignments are performed within the environment of facilities, laboratories, and/or manufacturing.

Practical aspects of the job include, but are not limited to, execution of the following:

  • Participation in Exposure Control Design for all new construction and renovation projects
  • Establishment of Exposure Controls/Exposure Elimination for New and Existing Materials
  • Exposure Based Risk Assessments (Qualitative and Quantitative)
  • Purchase and Maintenance of Media and Industrial Hygiene Sampling Equipment (Calibration/Service)
  • Exposure Sampling Method Determination, Execution, and Verification of the Accuracy and Validity of the Sampling and Analysis Results
  • Independent Execution of the Sampling Plan and Employee Initiated Requests for Sampling
  • Biological Sampling (surface, air, liquids)
  • Chemical Sampling (surface, air, liquids)
  • Noise Assessment and Control
  • Lighting Assessment
  • Indoor Air Quality Assessment
  • Ventilation and Control System Assessment
  • Report Writing
  • Communication of Sampling Results
  • Coaching/Training on Exposure Risks and Effective Use of Controls
  • Identification and Implementation of a Workable and Effective, Risk Mitigation Strategy, as a member of a team to include SHE, the User Department, and the End User
  • Maintenance of Legal Documentation for Assessment and Sampling Activities
  • Management of the Respiratory Protection Program (Policy, Auditing, Training & Recordkeeping)
  • Management of the Hearing Conservation Program (Policy, Auditing, Training & Recordkeeping)

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate/Graduate degree (BS/MS) in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health or related Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health discipline.
  • Minimum 3+ years independently performing Industrial Hygiene Risk Assessments, Exposure Monitoring, and Investigations, Suggesting and Establishing Exposure Controls, Utilizing and Maintaining IH Sampling and Analysis Equipment, Completing Technical Reports, and Maintaining Legal Documentation for all IH Related Activities.

  • Ability to Multitask, Track Projects, and Successfully Follow Up on Open Tasks
  • Ability to Take Direction/Follow Direction/Be Trusted to Work Independently/Be Teachable
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Strong Investigation Skills with Significant Experience
  • Ability to wear a respirator and protective clothing, climb a ladder, and lift/carry up to 40 pounds, occasionally
  • Ability to visually inspect work areas, assess conditions of use, and use Industrial Hygiene related sampling equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training on and Experience with Potent Compounds
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting exposure control systems (fume hoods, gloveboxes, BSCs, and other)
  • Strong Customer Service Skills
  • Experience in a Pharmaceutical R&D Environment
  • Experience with Biohazards and Animal Research and Testing
  • Experience in Designing New Laboratory and Production Facilities
  • Experience Teaching or Speaking to a Large Group
