  • Full-time employment (40 hours per week)
  • Work Hours: 2nd Shift (2:45 PM - 11:15 PM; 30 minute lunch)
  • Works 10 days in 14 with every other weekend off.

Functions include monitoring, providing, and auditing/evaluating facility policies/procedures, nursing interventions, and related health maintenance/restoration activities; infection control; risk management; and educating/training individuals and staff in health practices and related issues; as well as achieving/maintaining compliance with facility and professional health care standards, guidelines, rules and regulations which include, but are not limited to: the Standards of Nursing Practice, Licensure requirements for Pennsylvania, and Intermediate Care Facilities for the Intellectually Disabled (ICF/ID) standards associated with the Nursing Services discipline; and to assure that optimal care and treatment (based on current professional practice) in a safe therapeutic environment is provided in assigned areas under the general supervision of the Director of Clinical Services.
Work is assigned by the Director of Clinical Services. Work direction is provided through consultation, written and verbal communications, specification of standards for performance, and independent judgment utilized in performing supervisory duties. Work is reviewed through observations, reports and conferences/meetings for effectiveness and compliance with Standards of Professional Nursing and other applicable rules, regulations, guidelines and standards.
The RNS functions provide IDT with information related to individuals' development, implementation of programs, monitoring, evaluating and revision of comprehensive Individual Support Plan(s). Reviews/completes assessment information and Interdisciplinary Reports; monitors and presents information to the Interdisciplinary Team on health maintenance/restoration or related matters relative to each individual's strengths and needs as part of a comprehensive ISP.
Directs and supervises the completion of Nursing Services Assessments (screening/evaluation) which are comprehensive, individualized, and include the following: presenting problems, cause (where possible), specific developmental strengths/needs, the need for services (without regard to actual availability of services), recommendations for services (based on current professional nursing practice) and available alternatives for the selection of needed services. The RNS completes 24 Hour Reports assuring accuracy and reflecting the assessment process, and records assessment results/recommendations in terms that facilitate clear communication across disciplines. Reviews Personal Support Plans and Nursing Support Actions, as assigned by the Director of Clinical Services, to assure that needs identified as priorities by the facility are addressed and that the training is constructed, provided and completed accurately (including data collection methods), and monitors and evaluates as assigned. Provides professional direction, technical assistance, and on-going evaluation of skills of professional and non-professional staff (in interventions related to health, hygiene and infection control) as required (coordinating and integrating Nursing interventions/activities with information from other disciplines to form the basis of an interdisciplinary team approach to services) in order to assure that current ICF/ID Standards, DHS/ODP guidelines, ethics/standards associated with the Nursing Services discipline, and Center policies/procedures are met and to assure that all individuals receive holistic and needs-based nursing services.
The RNS provides professional direction, technical assistance, on-going evaluation of clinical skills, and professional practice of nursing staff in assigned areas. This is completed to assure adherence to laws, regulations, standards, rules, guidelines and policies/procedures.
The RNS assures that nursing and related health services are implemented for individuals in assigned areas by reviewing individual records, personally reviewing and analyzing reports, and communicating expectations to staff, in order to provide optimal nursing services to each individual.
Identifies and addresses training needs of health services staff; evaluates and initiates training recommendations, appraising the effects of training on overall performance of health and related staff; plans and conducts on-the-job training; and demonstrates efficient work methods to maximize staff skills and/or knowledge and to provide quality services.
In conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, plans, develops, implements and conducts training to provide for the progressive professional growth of the individual members of the Nursing Services Staff (to upgrade skills, refine techniques and improve the quality of services to individuals). In addition, participates in center training programs to assist IDT members in increasing professional/personal skills and team functioning. Develops and maintains the professional skill necessary to perform the duties of a Registered Nurse Supervisor by participating in training programs and professional conferences designed to increase both supervisory and clinical skills.
The RNS provides guidance/direction/supervision/assistance for the promotion and maintenance of an optimal health status for individuals served, families and members of the health care system.
Supervises licensed nursing personnel assigned to the facility by: implementing established management directives, procedures and practices; assigning work; assessing staffing needs; allocating staff, which includes polling and assigning overtime; coordinating work schedules with other nursing staff (reporting staffing issues to management); observing work in progress; conducting conferences; reviewing written work; and evaluating work performance against professional nursing and other applicable standards.
Responds to employees' grievances and complaints, conducts initial investigation into cause and conditions, holds discussion with employees (explaining and enforcing institutional personnel policies), and consults with the Director of Clinical Services and the Labor Relations Coordinator to resolve complaints and/or corrective actions in accordance with the applicable contracts to maintain effective and efficient operations.
The RNS represents the Center by serving as a role model employee, advocating for individuals who have Developmental Disabilities, and interacting appropriately with the staff and the public to maintain effective and efficient facility operations.
Participates in the development and review of policies/procedures affecting the delivery of services to individuals served; develops, implements, evaluates and modifies nursing standards and procedures consistent with center policy and in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services to maintaining quality nursing service provision.
Identifies, collects and analyzes data (not limited to infection control, mammograms, medication errors, transcription errors, medication plans, and fractures) in order to reproduce factual reports reflecting disease states, trends, treatments and effectiveness of treatments. The RNS coordinates infection control training to assure a safe living environment for the individuals and a safe work environment for staff. Identifies and coordinates employee health programs including, but not limited to: Tuberculosis screening, Hepatitis and Flu vaccination, environmental controls and physical exams.
Serves as a resource to institution staff in infection control issues.
Constructs quality assurance monitors to assess implementation of identified policies/procedures, and analyzes data obtained to determine effectiveness of policy/procedure and compliance of involved staff in implementation. Works with the Director of Clinical Services in identification of areas of need and reports required. Trains subordinate staff in the performance of quality assurance audits. Utilizes database to assure quality improvement in service provision to the individuals.
A Nursing Shift Supervisor coordinates and approves/disapproves leave requests (for licensed nursing staff and in concurrence with established procedures); schedules nurses' time and monitors leave usage to assure effective operations and adherence to contractual agreements; maintains, analyzes and utilizes records pertaining to seniority, overtime equalization, complement control and leave usage by keeping records updated and identifying areas of concern; interviews prospective employees and recommends employee selection or ranks applicants in terms of preferred ability for employment to assure accuracy and maximum utilization of positions. The RNS participates as a member of standing and ad hoc committees. The RNS completes related duties and projects as assigned by interacting regularly with the living area and facility staff in order to ensure consistent operations and to achieve living area, division/discipline and facility goals.

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements - Three years as a Registered Nurse (Commonwealth class title); OR four years of professional nursing experience providing care and treatment services consistent with those needed for individuals with a mental or physical injury or illness and/or a developmental disability.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current license to practice as a registered nurse issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing; or possession of a non-renewable temporary practice permit issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Employees possessing non-renewable temporary practice permits must obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse within the one year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
