Manager Production Full-time

at General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems in Nebraska (Published at 19-02-2020)

Overview: GD-OTS is looking for an experienced Manager, Production to join our Lincoln, NE organization. We are expanding rapidly and looking for motivated and creative individuals who want to help support and shape this organization as we grow. Activities will include the design and development of high performance composite structures such as rocket motor cases, missile structures and composite over-wrapped pressurant tanks. These structures are highly engineered to meet demanding applications in the defense and aerospace industries.
The Manager, Production is directly responsible for the production activities of a three shift operation, working through his supervisory staff. The Production Manager has direct accountability for all production operations within the 250,000 sq.ft. manufacturing facility. The Production Manager interfaces with Product Managers, design teams, planning/scheduling, and senior management to insure customer need dates are met safely, on-time, at appropriate cost, and quality. Major Position Responsibilities:
  • Direct all production activities to insure timely completion of finished products for delivery to the customer at defined cost and quality standards.
  • Manage and optimize labor costs and direct vs indirect labor allocation.
  • Insure that job times for all works centers fall within standard operation times and perform corrective action when needed.
  • Create and drive production plans as necessary to maintain product delivery schedules to customers.
  • Aligns with Facilities and Maintenance to ensure preventative maintenance and upkeep of equipment in the shop to insure efficient operation with minimal down-time.
  • Champion and enforce company safety standards and fosters a ?safety first? culture through training, evaluation and continual focus.
  • Ensures the facility and employees comply with federal, state and local EH&S laws and regulations.
  • Fosters a "safety first" culture through training, evaluation and continual focus.
  • Enforces 5S requirements by proactive auditing and corrective action.
  • Leads by example and creates and maintains strong partnerships and positive relationships with internal and external associates through open communication, transparency and performance measurement/feedback.
  • Drive continuous improvement for all production departments and utilizes Lean Manufacturing techniques to optimize operations.
  • Conduct daily ?war board? meetings with all production department managers to review quality, improvement (?Quick Kill?), safety, and cost requirements.
  • Develops systems and processes that track and optimize productivity standards and metrics and performance targets to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • In collaboration with leadership, tracks and takes appropriate action where trends are not positive, or when results are below desired benchmarks/targets
  • Coordinate with the Procurement team to prevent material shortages.
  • Escalate and orchestrate responses by production departments to expedited and emergency production requirements.Organize the placement within the shop of work cells and equipment for efficient production operations.
  • Plan and manage staffing levels and skillsets to insure appropriate personnel are in place and assigned to required duties.
  • Recommend and plan for capital equipment replacement and acquisition necessary to meet production needs.
  • Ensures the shop has the right materials at the right place at the right time in order to reduce waste and result in 100% customer order fulfillment.
  • Maintains high morale through effective management, including frequent reinforcement of positive behavior and recognition of high performance as well as correction of undesirable behavior.
  • Manage production operations with a ?hands on? approach out on the shop floor interacting with employees to achieve desired objectives.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Significant knowledge of and experience in discrete manufacturing processes and equipment. Experience is preferred in a filament winding fabrication setting.
  • Knowledge and experience as a practitioner of continuous improvement methodologies, Lean Manufacturing, 6S, and/or Six Sigma to eliminate waste and improve efficiencies.
  • Strong leadership skills with a commitment to excellence demonstrated in work history.
  • Proven track record of success as a Plant Manager (or Operations Manager at a larger organization).
  • Excellent speaking, writing and listening skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced and high-demand environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP systems in Discrete Manufacturing; Oracle and IFS a plus.
  • Experience with cutting/forming, machining, welding, painting/blasting, winding, casting, and mechanical assembly and ?routings? necessary to create finished products.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), with emphasis on Excel as it is used heavily for data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision to achieve customer satisfaction and timely delivery of products.
  • Strong influence management skills are needed to work with Program Managers and other departments to achieve desired objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage using KPIs and metrics to identify improvement opportunities and take corrective actions.
  • Minimum seven years of progressive experience in a key leadership role in a discrete manufacturing operation (fabrication highly desired).
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Management (or related discipline), or equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Strong business acumen (management principles, strategic planning, critical thinking, budgeting, resource allocation, human resources, etc.).
  • Strong collaborator and mentor to others.
