Job Title: Produce Clerk---Starts at $10/hr

Reports To: Produce Manager, Produce Assistant Manager

Location: 1500 Lafayette Road, St. Louis, MO 63104

Status: Hourly Full Time/Part Time

To maximize the sales and profit in the produce department through proper selection and packaging of the produce and through courteous customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Greet customers, respond to customer questions, requests, complaints and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
  • Sell, select, wrap or package the products customers want to purchase.
  • Write down customer?s special orders or requests.
  • If asked, prepare and organize the cooler, freezer, and preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortage, damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code date the product.
  • Clean department floors, mirrors, containers, cooler, shelves, slicer, fryer, product production area and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Load stocking carts or pallets, transport cases to sales floor, cooler, or product preparation area either on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in the designated area, check the product code or freshness date and face, front and rotate each display.*
  • Assure the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a store manager of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up or remove all broken containers, packing materials and boxes from the sales floor or product preparation area immediately.**
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the store manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.*
  • Understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, juicer, pineapple corer, case cutter, pallet jack, fork lift, knife, intercom, pricing gun, and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, or forklift).
  • Count and record individual items of merchandise for inventory.
  • Change department pricing as directed and manually price mark or label merchandise without a UPC code.
  • Evaluate product quality and move damaged/unsalable and returnable products from case to the preparation area, reprocessing the merchandise in to a salable form or marking the product down in price.
  • Use the proper case opening and product stacking techniques to prevent damage to product.
  • Remove trash from the aisle or product preparation area and operate the baler.
  • Change signs, light bulbs, shelf signs/tags and price markers on the case or shelf display.
  • Communicate with the department manager on problems, recommendation for change and merchandising ideas.
  • Report to produce manager, any change in cooler temperatures.
  • Replenish supplies on the sales floor and in the product preparation area.
  • Record out-of-stock conditions and the time they occur, report the department manager.

  • Language Skills: Ability to give or receive complex verbal instructions or descriptions to and from supervisors, co-workers and associates concerning store or department policy or procedures or use of equipment.
  • Education and/or Experience: Minimum educational requirement is a high school education.

  • Use both hands to attain merchandise or cases on the top shelf of cooler or freezer storage shelves or racks, up to 84 inches from the floor.
  • Reach forward and down with both hands up to 36 inches to attain merchandise on stocking cart, multi0tray rack or pallets.
  • Reach forward and down with both hands up to 36 inches to clean shelves or floor area or control maintenance or stocking equipment.
  • Reach forward and down with both hands up to 36 inches to place items on shelving or displays and in cases or freezer.
  • Reach up to full extension of arms to place signs, banners and light bulbs in place.
  • Handle labels, signs or tags, case cutter or utility knife, grasp and handle wet, iced, cold, metal, paper, plastic products, cardboard, packaging and debris.
  • Manipulate maintenance equipment handles, grasps and knobs.
  • Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting or opening, sorting, loading and unloading, moving or removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
  • Move stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 300 lbs) and maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards.
  • Move display fixtures and product preparation equipment.
  • Climb on ladders, racks, cases, shelving and stairs up to three feet in height.
  • Balance on cases of product.
  • Balance on wet, slick, dirty and debris strewn floors.
  • Stock shelves, rotate product, face and front shelves eight inches from floor to 36 inches in height.
  • Pick up cardboard, packaging and debris from floor.
  • Stock shelves, rotate product, face and front shelves eight inches from floor to 36 inches in height.
  • Perform maintenance and sanitation function,
  • See cases, case cutter edge, case trips, shelf location, product size, description and quality, customers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, scale, wrapper, department production equipment, cooler layout, packing materials, debris on floor, aisle markers and signs.
  • Perceive color difference on product and product labels.
  • See cleaning and maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts and baler controls.
  • See condition of product.
  • Listen to customer questions and responses.
  • Listen to intercom or phone.
  • Listen to co-workers questions.
  • Listen to the sound of case cutter, department production equipment, baler, pallet jack, or cleaning equipment operation.

  • Inside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity from the backdoor, compressor, cooler and freezer. While performing the duties of this job, the associate frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
