Lean Process Engineer (Experienced) Full-time

What Your Job Will Be Like

Job Summary

Lead the development, deployment and continuous improvement of a lean operating system, with considerations of system interfaces, data and modules, to add more value to the customer. This complex operating system integrates a myriad of tools and processes into a framework to improves work processes at the systemic level. Integrates a broad range of knowledge from engineering and business application to deliver continuous improvement efforts across the Labs utilizing lean thinking, six sigma techniques, design thinking, lean product development (set-based concurrent engineering), learning organization constructs, Agile / Scrum, architectural design, and other problem-solving methods. Uses an understanding of science, engineering, systems engineering, systems thinking, and business value proposition to create, analyze, develop, and design end-to-end system solutions considering elements such as people, processes, products, tools, behaviors, and culture. Core processes are applied to technical and business platforms considering the interfaces between existing systems and new systems that are being developed. Must effectively work with groups across the Labs and the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise to identify improvements to operational and product development methods. Develops objective studies and approaches to address technical and operational problems in partnership with project and program managers, technical experts, and senior leaders. Benchmark methods and approaches beyond the Labs (commercial, non-profit, etc.) and adapt practices to this environment to reach goals in both operational and technical areas of interest. Communicates the results of analyses, characterizing options and tradeoffs and facilitates prototypes and application of full system implementation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applies technical, engineering, science and/ or business expertise to define, understand, and resolve complex problems at the system (multiple inter-related component) level.
  • Looks for ways to continually enhance system performance by selecting methods and techniques to improve the work, leveraging lean, six sigma, lean product development, and learning organization methods and principles.
  • Defining the problem, ideal state, target state with detail data and models.
  • Create prototypes that identify, analyze and resolve system design weaknesses.
  • Building strong agreement with the team involved in the improvement process on both the what and how to improve.
  • Identifying and resolving risks and hurdles that prevent closure to an improved process.
  • Demonstrating technical knowledge and/or process improvement methods to deeply understand issues so that you can actively facilitate resolution, while not creating unintended consequences in the larger system.
  • Teach and coach others to identify problems in a structured and standard way, including building strong problem statements, developing experiments to solve the problem and implementing solutions for sustainability that consider the end-to-end system.
  • Build collateral (white papers, formal classes, experiential workshops, presentations for senior leaders, etc.) to ensure that methods and approaches used can be transferred to others, including those new to the workforce or those looking for alternate ways to approach the work to get better results.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor?s degree in STEM field (Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Mechanical, etc.) or Business; or relevant discipline PLUS five or more years of experience, or equivalent: experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master?s degree in a STEM field (Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Mechanical, etc.) or Business
  • Applies critical judgment in determining relevant application of engineering and / or business practices to ensure the delivery of high quality product.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of lean thinking including the use of an A3 for problem resolution and project planning that lead to measurable results for the organization.
  • Strong writing, communication, facilitation and organizational skills to both a technical and non-technical community.
  • Proficiency in facilitating work of multiple people and groups to build strong agreement on the problem statement, considering system thinking, and actions to resolve.
  • Demonstrated teaming skills including the ability to work effectively with other organizations, functions, customers and suppliers.
  • Strong evidence of structured processes to complete your work and work with others, including keeping stakeholders apprised of progress.
  • Proficiency in systems thinking including identify and understanding the inter-relationships between people, processes, tools and behavior.
  • Proven application of engineering and/ or improvement methods, tools and techniques to design, maintain and improve product and processes across multiple groups.

The Business Excellence Center has the primary mission of establishing, deploying and maintaining the Sandia Laboratory Operating System (LOS). The journey will enable Sandia to increase the speed and flow in product and service delivery. Security Clearance
