This position, under the supervision of the Registered Nurses, Manager, and/or Unit Director, ensures the efficient operation of the OR in the Labor and Delivery area. Scrubs as a member of the surgical team under the direction of a registered nurse, providing assistance for scheduled as well as emergent cases.


Unit Operations: Actively supports the operations of the nursing unit.

  • Prepares delivery tables using sterile technique as required.
  • Adheres to policy and procedure for cleaning, and decontamination of all instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains competency in scrub technique by scrubbing in for cesarean section.
  • Assists with specimen collection as delegated by RN and ensures timely transport of specimens to the lab.
  • Observes universal precautions and aseptic technique.
  • Initiates emergency procedures when necessary.

Fiscal Accountability: Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the business and fiscal aspects of St. David?s Georgetown Hospital and the St. David?s Partnership.

  • Maintains par levels of supplies as required.
  • In collaboration with the Director, tracks requisitions and purchase orders.
  • Works with other team members to inventory and order supplies through Medibuy.
  • Collaborates with the patient care team to assure that chargeable items are accounted for in a timely fashion.
  • Prepares and opens instruments and supplies according to physician preference, maintaining sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates ability to select, utilize and manage equipment in the OR in a cost effective manner.

Patient Care: Responds to the developmental needs of the patient and family by demonstrating basic knowledge of patient growth and development and by providing individualized patient/family care which addresses language, culture and learning needs.

  • Assists staff as needed with patient care, i.e. answering call lights, assist MD with procedures, assists with labor and deliveries, assists with transferring patients, restocking of delivery carts and infant warmers with supplies and non-narcotic medications, witnessing wastes and returns of narcotic medications.
  • Keeps RN aware of significant information regarding patient and family.
  • Collaborates with the RN regarding unusual situations and seeks assistance as needed.
  • Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures.

Customer Relations: Consistently facilitates positive communication with patients, families, physicians and other guests of St. David?s Georgetown Hospital.

  • Answers the telephone courteously within three rings.
  • Routes telephone calls to appropriate individual.
  • Takes messages accurately and alerts appropriate individual.
  • Promptly greets individuals entering the unit and offers assistance.
  • Provides accurate information to all customers.
  • Understands ones own role and how it relates to others.

Performance Improvement: Actively participates in unit performance improvement activities.

  • Demonstrates an on-going knowledge of and participation in the unit based PI program.
  • Is alert to potential improvement opportunities.
  • Responds with improved performance to results obtained from PI monitors.

Professionalism: Consistently performs job and conducts self in ways which develop mutual respect and trust.

Required: High School graduate/GED. Additional education and training as an OB Scrub Tech as evidenced by on the job training, competency validation and/or completion of an OB Scrub Tech course.

Preferred: Graduation from an accredited Operating Room Technology program. One year experience as an OB or OR technician.


Required: Current certification for BCLS Healthcare Provider.

Preferred: Certification as a Scrub Tech
