Software Engineer, NLP (Natural Language Processing) Infrastructure Full-time

at Tableau in California (Published at 25-10-2019)

Would you like to work on one of the most disruptive products in the Business Intelligence industry? Tableau revolutionized self-service data visualization by replacing paper reports with dynamic, interactive data visualizations to help people see and understand data. Help start a new revolution as an Infrastructure Engineer on the Natural Language Processing team, leveraging cutting edge technologies to enable analytical capabilities powered by natural language.

We have a great culture with a focus on self-improvement, collaboration and trying to reach our potential as a high performing team. Last but not least, we have difficult problems to solve in automation, site resiliency, and fast growing capacity, hosted in AWS. This is a challenging role that will have a big impact on Tableau?s success.

What you'll be doing?

The NLP team is expanding the way people can analyze their data with more meaningful full-text querying capabilities. As an infrastructure engineer, you will help design, deliver and scale the microservice architecture powering those advanced technologies. You will draw on your knowledge of networking, databases, cloud orchestration, deployment automation, dependency management, and containerization. You?ll get the best of both worlds ? large-scale opportunities with high-complexity challenges in supporting an established customer base, and the freedom and agility of working with a full-stack engineering team on decoupled microservices and a freshly architected technology stack.

You will...

  • Contribute to our vision for fast, reliable deployments so that we get timely product feedback
  • Both write high-quality code for our systems, and operate them with a deployment and monitoring stack
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, so that our full-stack Ask Data service runs well
  • Participate in rapid response to fix issues, and continuously improve system resilience

Who you are?

  • A quick learner. Like the other members of the NLP team, you have the desire and capacity to quickly master tools, programming languages or a technologies at a very deep level that will allow you and your team to grow and succeed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experienced. You have at least 2 years of industry experience deploying and monitoring scalable, low-latency, and highly available distributed systems in cloud and/or on-premises environments.
  • Educated. You have a BS degree in a technical major, such as engineering or computer science or equivalent experience.
  • A team player. You work with your team mates and other teams to reach shared goals. You advocate for a position and once a decision is made, you get behind it whether it was your choice or a coworker's.
  • Highly Technical. You have proven understanding of high availability, distributed consensus, data/system replication, and disaster recovery methodologies in the system and database spaces (e.g. Postgres).
  • Flexible. You're able to take part in on-call rotations shifts with teammates.
  • A Teacher. You both are a teacher and a lifelong learner. You have mentored your share of systems engineers or junior developers.
  • You are a Recruiter! Tableau hires company builders and, in this role, you will be asked to be on the constant lookout for the best talent to bring onboard to help us continue to build one of the best companies in the world!
