Corrections Officer Senior (BFOQ): State Farm Women's Work Center Full-time

Female DCJS Certified Corrections Officers with at least 18 months of VADOC experience in a security position are strongly encouraged to apply. Corrections Officers contribute to the agency's public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and offenders by ensuring effective and safe custody and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. This is successfully accomplished through the use of evidence based practices and principles that enhance effective communication strategies and role modeling as part of collaborative multi-disciplinary teams addressing offender needs. Officers provide security over adult offenders at the institution and while in transport; supervise the daily activities of offenders while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with the visitors, staff, offenders and public to maintain orderly and secure operations. Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (?BFOQ??) is an exception to the restrictions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (1964) regarding discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, and national origin that, under certain conditions, legitimately may require an employer to require an individual of a specific sex, national origin or religious affiliation to staff a certain job. A Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ) has been approved for State Farm Women's Work Center. Due to the current facility staffing, it is a requirement that this position be filled with a specific gender to ensure availability of both genders within the facility for specific posts. This facility is seeking female applicants to fill Corrections Officer positions. Please Note: Corrections Officers may not transfer, to include a transfer through the competitive process, during the first two (2) years of employment unless an exception for hardship is approved in accordance with the process outlined in VADOC Operating Procedure 102.2, Recruitment, Selection, and Appointment. Please Note: All persons that are newly hired, rehired, transferred, promoted, or demoted into a Corrections Officer position must serve a new 12-month probationary period. This excludes current Virginia Department of Corrections security employees possessing an active DCJS Corrections Officer Certification.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or a GED equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation. Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Stable employment history and former corrections officer experience. Current or former DCJS certification, where certification can be reinstated by attendance at in-service and range.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer coursework at a community college, college, or university. Prefer individuals at least 21 years old (a waiver may be provided by the Unit Head for individuals 18-20 years old). Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Special Requirements

All applicants are subject to a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen. The investigation may include: fingerprint checks (State Police, FBI); local agency checks; employment verification; verification of education (relevant to employment); credit checks; and other checks requested by the hiring authority.
