    Duties

    Summary

    This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service ARS, Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center, in Stuttgart, Arkansas.
    The incumbent performs maintenance and repair of buildings and greenhouses, related structures, fixtures and utilities support. The incumbent also constructs new devices or facilities,or modifies equipment using the applicable trades electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and others -to provide essential support for the research staff.

    Responsibilities

    • Recognize, test, and repair malfunctions in equipment through visual, audible and mechanical checks of equipment.
    • Assist with installation of compressed air, vacuum, water, and gas lines
    • Assist with planning and laying out installations and modifications to various systems and equipment.
    • Read, interpret, and use work orders, blueprints, diagrams for controls, wiring diagrams, schematic drawing, specifications, and technical manuals.
    • Operate and maintain chilled water and evaporation cooling systems, via multiple computer software.
    • Install with installation of a variety of pipe at the facility to include: PVC steel pipe, galvanized pipe, brass and copper piping.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Maintenance Workerwithout more than normal supervision (Screen Out)).     Working Conditions
    Frequently works in areas of temperature extremes of 95 degrees and above. Noise level can be high almost to the extreme of requiring ear plugs. Some work situations may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Occasionally works in contaminated areas and may be exposed to biological hazards when servicing sewer lift stations. May also be subjected to gases, steam bums, broken bones, electrical shock, bruises,cuts, and scrapes. Due to some of the above mentioned hazards, Personal Protective Equipment such as goggles, a respirator, and gloves may be needed occasionally.
    Physical Effort
    Duties require lifting and carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds. Lifting equipment such as pallet jack and hand trucks are available for heavier objects. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and work on ladders, scaffolding are required. Work may be performed in uncomfortable and tiring positions.

Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
