Job Function:

The primary function of the Crisis Care Specialist is to assist consumers who are experiencing a mental health crisis in a safe and supportive crisis residential facility who would likely be at risk of a psychiatric hospitalization without early intervention. This position involves one-to-one crisis stabilization support for mental health consumers by assisting consumers to achieve short-term crisis related goals to become more self-sufficient to manage their mental illness. Crisis Care Specialists will provide crisis diversion supports by building skills of relapse prevention, symptoms management, medication management, building natural & social supports and connecting with additional treatment services as needed.

The Crisis Care Specialist will receive training that includes, but is not limited to, an orientation to mental illness, crisis intervention & stabilization, relapse prevention & coping skills, medications, general treatment approaches, dealing with emergency needs, basic counseling skills, CPR, First Aid, Managing Aggressive Behaviors, Suicide Assessment, Working with Addicts, Professional Standards & Ethics and clinical documentation. Hours of Crisis Care Specialists will be in response to consumer?s needs in an acute residential setting, which includes shift work for day, evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts.

General Duties:

  • Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches and maintain a therapeutic milieu while assessing triggers & precursors to symptoms and risk factors to assist consumer in stabilizing their crisis episode.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of program protocols and behavior management in carrying out suicide precautions, welfare checks, detox protocol and general treatment models as identified.
  • Respond to crisis situations calm & non-reactive by utilizing non-physical de-escalation techniques to intervene with consumers in crisis in a safe manner to de-escalate situations whenever possible. Assists in facilitating and processing with consumer post crisis.
  • Interacts with emergency personnel such as police, rescue, fire and agency Security team to facilitate emergency service needs while protecting consumer confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Participate as member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, working in conjunction with Crisis Clinician, Crisis Case Managers, Program Staff, Medication Providers, etc and participate in carrying out treatment plan goals. Address, review and/or evaluate goals and objectives with the consumer throughout the process of treatment and crisis resolution.
  • Assist consumers in learning about their mental illness, including but not limited to: symptom management, medication management, independent living skills, identifying strategies to cope with and/or decrease symptoms of their illness.
  • Display flexibility and knowledge of all areas of CDS programs. Crisis Care Specialists will work & be pulled to all CDS locations as needed.
  • Monitor consumer?s prescribed medications and provide education on symptoms & side effects of medications.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, organized work environment for consumer and staff by assisting in daily maintenance and general upkeep of the crisis residential facility which includes but not limited to program laundry, general house cleaning, meal preparation & following menus, emergency drills, follow & carry-out program guidelines as directed by Program Manager.
  • Assists with the admissions, discharges, frequent safety checks, appointments and transport of consumers.
  • Thoroughly search and securing of consumer?s belongings, documents accurate inventory and remove contraband.
  • Assist in facilitating treatment & recovery groups by engaging with consumers to educate on recovery based skills.
  • Monitor UAs and breathalyzers as requested by a Crisis Clinician, Crisis Case Manager or Supervisor.
  • Complete all paperwork required,( i.e., progress notes, SALs, Med MARS, incident reports, timesheets, mileage, ect.) by the end of each shift.
  • Timely attendance and punctuality to all scheduled shifts, trainings, supervision etc. Provide appropriate notice and follow program protocol on notification prior to absence and tardiness.
  • Establish appropriate and professional boundaries with consumers and treaters. Treat consumers and treaters with Dignity and Respect at all times.
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to work positive and effectively within a team as well as individually.
  • Consistently demonstrate effective communication skills with consumer, coworkers and supervisor.
  • Assure compliance with program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain agency and department trainings on yearly basis.
  • Complete other duties assigned both written and implied.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required as well as 2 year of experience working with individuals with mental illness or in the human services field.
  • Individual must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a valid Kansas driver?s license and reliable transportation with auto insurance.
  • Be able to pass criminal background check and DCF Child & Adult Abuse Registry check.
  • Requires knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to complete required KsTrain online trainings and program trainings.
  • Must be able to perform day-to-day physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to- 20% of scheduled time; data entry, answering the phone and computer work, 80% of scheduled time; ability to lift up to 25 pounds, frequently moving around the building and community, repetitive moving, carrying and lifting as the job demand.
  • Ability to work day, evening, night, weekend & holidays shifts based on the needs of the program.
