Senior Staff Engineer - Geotechnical Full-time

McMillen Jacobs Associates has an opportunity in our Seattle office for a recent geotechnical engineering graduate with an interest in consulting engineering for the heavy civil and underground construction industry. We are seeking an entry level candidate, with up to six years of experience, and a strong desire to design tunnels, shafts, foundations and retaining structures. This position offers a great opportunity for a motivated, detail-oriented, collaborative engineer to work on diverse jobs, from retaining walls to regional transit and water & wastewater mega-projects. The successful candidate will work primarily in the downtown Seattle office and also have short-term field assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare geotechnical design calculations for tunnels, shafts, foundations, temporary and permanent excavation support systems, ground improvement, slope stability and other types of underground structures.
  • Perform seismic response analyses, liquefaction analyses, and ground deformation analyses.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines in solving complex, multi-disciplinary design problems.
  • Support geotechnical investigation programs including planning, permitting, implementation, data reporting, and writing interpretative reports.
  • Perform site visits to projects under construction and carry out field assignments (construction monitoring or geotechnical investigation).
  • Write technical reports and other documents explaining the basis for designs or recommendations.
  • Write technical specifications and review contractor submittals and requests for information.
  • Work under the direction of senior engineers, who provide technical oversight.
  • Work with AutoCAD technicians to develop design drawings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering; Master's degree preferred. Zero to six years of experience.
  • Current Engineer in Training (EIT) status or Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Relevant job experience, including internships, is desirable.
  • Completion of relevant coursework in: soil mechanics, geology and geotechnical design, structural analysis, finite element analysis, structural dynamics, reinforced concrete design, steel design,
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to analyze problems and develop engineering solutions.
  • Familiarity with industry standard CAD/BIM software packages and design analysis software for stability analysis, seepage analysis, shoring analysis and site response analysis is considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel for short-term field assignments to remote locations.
  • Ability to demonstrate valid work authorization in the United States.
