Environment, Health and Safety Specialist Full-time

Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, Inc., one of the largest metals distributors in the US, and recently celebrated our 175th anniversary. We operate approximately 100 locations with 4,000 employees in North America and China. We are currently seeking bright, energetic individuals to fill our Environment, Health, and Safety Specialist role position and to contribute as an essential member within the Environment, Health, and Safety Department. These individuals will travel to our Ryerson locations throughout North America with their home base open to negotiation.
Primary responsibility is to provide overall leadership and expertise in environment, health and safety. To provide the safest work environment possible for all of our employees and achieve/maintain OSHA and EPA compliance. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring EHS programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal and state EHS regulations.
  • Acting as the EHS technical resource providing guidance and expertise for situations, programs and processes that resolve local concerns.
  • Performing risk assessments for processes and new equipment, ranking risks with regard to relevant exposures and hazards, develop and present corrective solutions with options with an eye toward fiscal and operation considerations.
  • Conducting safety inspections of operations facilities to identify deficiencies related to company policies and procedures and Federal, State and Provincial regulations. Work with the facilities to ensure that all deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Conducting EHS training for managers and employees.
  • Conduct accident/incident investigations to identify the root causes of the incident. Develop and propose corrective solutions to prevent reoccurrence of the incident and work with the appropriate personnel to implement solutions.
  • Measuring KPIs to assess EHS program effectiveness
Position Requirements:
? Associates degree required, BA/BS degree in environment, health and safety or related field highly preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of EHS experience in manufacturing environment
  • Ability to lead, negotiate, recommend and implement solutions
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management
  • Ability to mature safety program into a safety culture
  • Computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Ability to train and mentor employees
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage changing priorities and multiple tasks
  • Track record of self-motivated, results-orientated team player
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
